5 Tips for Healthy Hair

Caring for your hair is just as important to your everyday routine as skincare to maintain healthy shiny hair. Follow these five simple tips from dermatologists:

  1. Wash oily hair more frequently.

The amount of oil your scalp produces determines how often you need to wash your hair -- the more oil your scalp produces, the more frequently you’ll need to wash your hair. As we age, our scalps make less oil, so you may not need to shampoo as often. If you notice flakes in your hair, you are likely not shampooing enough which can lead to dandruff or other scalp issues.

  2. Focus on shampooing your scalp.

The main goal is to clean your scalp rather than all your hair. Make sure your scalp gets clean when you’re shampooing.

  3. Use conditioner on the tips of your hair after shampoo.

Every time you shampoo, be sure to use conditioner concentrated on the tips of your hair (unless you’ve used a 2-in-1 formula). Although conditioner can improve the look of damaged hair, it can also make fine hair look limp if too much is used on the entire length of your hair.

  4. Use products formulated for your hair type.

Many shampoo and conditioner brands give the same benefits to your hair, regardless of cost. For best results, use products that are formulated for your hair type. For example, use color-treated products if you color your hair.

  5. Protect your hair when swimming.

Chlorine and other pool chemicals can damage your hair. Wetting and conditioning your hair before swimming can help protect your hair from the negative impacts of those chemicals. If needed, use a deep conditioner after swimming to replace moisture.
