9 Tips for Healthy-Looking Skin

One of the most commonly asked questions is “How do I keep my skin looking young and healthy?” These nine tips will help you do just that!

Apply sunscreen every day.

It may feel overstated, but sunscreen is one of the top ways to protect your skin against the harmful rays of the sun and prevent damage that makes skin appear older. It’s best to use an SPF 30+ water-resistant sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection.

Do not smoke.

Smoking increases the rate at which your skin ages. Additionally, research proves that smoking can worsen some skin conditions, contributing to premature aging.

Check for skin cancer.

Check your skin continually for skin cancer. If anything is new, changing, or unusual, get it checked out by a board-certified dermatologist immediately. Fortunately, skin cancer is visible, and early detection and treatment save lives.

Use self-tanners.

If you like the appearance of tan skin, use a self-tanner. This allows you to have the best of both worlds—great-looking skin without sun damage! Be sure to still use sunscreen when you’re outdoors.

Use appropriate skin care products.

Every skin type is different and requires different products. Make sure your skincare products are designed for your skin type to help it look its best – oily, dry, normal, combination, or sensitive.

Scrub gently.

Do not scrub your skin harshly when cleaning it. Aggressive scrubbing can irritate the skin and worsen skin conditions, including acne.

Wash your face gently and consistently.

Wash your face when you wake up, before bed, and after sweating. This helps to keep your skin free from dirt, grime, and makeup. Be sure to wash it gently and resist scrubbing. First, wet it with lukewarm water. Then, apply a mild cleanser gently in a circular motion with your fingertips. Finally, rinse off the cleanser and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Reduce stress.

Stress can cause premature aging, so you’ll want to find ways to reduce the amount of stress in your life. Stress can also contribute to flare-ups of certain skin conditions, like acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

Visit a board-certified dermatologist.

Your dermatologist is a skin expert! Having diagnosed and treated thousands of skin conditions and diseases, they are the ones with the expertise to advise and help you.

We’d love to help you with any skin concerns you have or help you take preventative measures for getting and maintaining healthy skin. Call our office at Dermatology of North Asheville at (828) 253-2533 to schedule an appointment.
