How to Test Skin Care Products
Testing new skin care products, even those prescribed by your dermatologist, is crucial to avoiding negative reactions. Knowing your skin type helps you choose products that are specially created for your skin, but it may still cause irritation to your skin.
Dermatologists recommend testing new products on several small areas of your skin before adding them to your skin care routine to predict whether your skin will react negatively. Follow these tips to test a product:
Apply the product twice daily for seven to ten days.
Choose a quarter-size spot on your skin where it won’t be washed away, such as the underside of your arm or the bend in your elbow. Apply the amount that you would typically use.
Leave the product on your skin as directed.
If you are testing a product you would normally wash off immediately after applying, such as a cleanser, let it sit on your skin for five minutes (or per instructions) before washing.
Use the product if there is no reaction after the recommended testing time.
If you don’t experience a reaction to the product, such as red, itchy, or swollen skin, it is safe to use the product as directed.
Use products formulated for your hair type.
Many shampoo and conditioner brands give the same benefits to your hair, regardless of cost. For best results, use products that are formulated for your hair type. For example, use color-treated products if you color your hair.
If you experience a negative reaction to the product, gently wash the product off and do not continue use.
If needed, use a cool compress or petroleum jelly to provide relief. Do not use this product again.
Once you’ve determined the ingredient causing the skin irritation, avoid products that contain that ingredient. For example, if a fragrance is causing a reaction, choose products labeled “fragrance free.”
Remember that some ingredients may irritate your skin, especially if your skin is sensitive. This is normal and temporary.
